The Research Institute for Electrical Machines (ICPE-ME) is a new and innovative institution having private character. It was established in 1992 with the main aim to enhance and adapt the scientific research in the specific area according to the present Romanian market economy. Nevertheless ICPE-ME has a long technical tradition as it is based on a former Electrical Machines Division of the Research Institute for Electrical Engineering (ICPE), an institution with more than 50 years of existence.

The main goal of ICPE-ME is to provide scientific and technical consultancy to the Romanian manufacturers of electrical machines and related equipments. Many of the electrical motors series manufactured today in Romania (general purpose or specialised motors) were designed in ICPE-ME. The Institute is also involved in manufacturing of special electrical equipments required by Romanian gas and oil industry such as ignition coils and related ignition and monitoring equipments, vibrating motors, special motors for explosion proof and chemical industry, permanent magnet synchronous generators for wind energy conversion.

The projects of general interest currently developed at ICPE-ME are supported by the Ministry of Education and Research in the frame of the National Plan of R&D on a grant basis. Other researches are directly contracted with manufacturers and users of electrical machines and related electrical drive equipments.
The most important research areas are: electrical machines of small and medium power, special transformers, electrical equipments for gas and oil industry, variable speed drive systems, computer-aided design for electrical engineering, materials for electrical machines, testing equipment for electrical machines and materials. Current researches on world general interest topics include equipments for vehicles, wind generated energy, high efficiency motors, control of noise pollution, unconventionally materials and machines.

The Institute has about 40 peoples representing 15 scientific researchers, high level technicians and workers. The researchers of ICPE-ME hold more than 50 invention patents and have published more than 40 papers over the last 5 years. The Institute has one of the best electrical machines and drives test laboratory in Romania for, modern computers and a small scale manufacturing capacity. The electrical machines up to 100 kW may be tested from the electrical, mechanical, thermal, noise and vibration point of view with the ICPE-ME endowments and also may be performed climatic and electromagnetic compatibility tests.

ICPE-ME has excellent relationship with most of the Romanian electrical machines companies, the Departments of Electrical Engineering from Universities and is willing to develop collaborative researches or manufacturing activities with partners from all over the world in the field of induction machines (motors, generators, general or special purposes, variable speed electrical drives), permanent magnet synchronous machines or brushless d.c. machines, specialised sources, etc.
